Tindaya Mountain

Tindaya. Fuerteventura.

The Natural Heritage Tindaya Mountain is a dome of trachytic nature (volcanic rock of basic composition), which has been exposed by erosion suffered by the volcano that was about it.
Its altitude is 401 meters and is visible over long distances due to special and differential color in relation to other surrounding mountains, it is isolated in a plain and its conical shape.
It lies at his feet the small town with the same name, with a restaurant and bars for visitors.

Of great archaeological importance, "the mountain of witches" has always been a sacred place for the ancient inhabitants of the island, and where we can find nearly 300 carved in stone (almost all podomorfos, footprints, all aimed westward, in particular at the Teide, which was where the Majoreros believed the Devil lived ...), and whose usefulness is not clear (ornamental, religious symbols, astronomy), so this natural area should be protected at all costs of possible human interventions

Tindaya. Cantera en la Montaña de Tindaya. The Trachyte is an ornamental stone of great beauty and economic value (about 100 €per square meter), used as kitchen countertops (polished), floors, walls, etc. (Fuerteventura Airport is coated on its main facade with stone Tindaya). It has been previously exploited the removal of this ornamental stone, but since it's protected natural area extraction is not allowed.
In the southern slopes of Mount Tindaya is a disused quarry where it is possible to observe the beauty of this rock with the typical bands (Liesegang circles), a zonation of the chemical elements (especially iron) that form the rock.

All Tindaya Mountain is covered with an interesting vegetation and the presence of some rare endemic species such as the Caralluma burchardii protected by regional standards. It's protected natural area since 1987 and since 1990 is Ecological Sensitivity Area.
To access the Mountain from Puerto del Rosario Tindaya must take the FV-10 in the direction of La Oliva.
